Sunset Ridge Community Project Showcase

All 8th graders at Sunset Ridge School are tasked with a project focused on community, service and developing awareness. As part of the IB curriculum, students individually or as a group complete The Community Project, which includes identifying a community need, creating a plan to serve that need, then taking action.

Sunset Ridge held a showcase on May 26 so students could share what they’ve been working on and the impact these projects have had on the community. Topics for these projects ranged from mental health awareness, to book drives and advocating for increased school bus safety.

Showcase attendees had the opportunity to vote for the projects they found most inspiring. The following projects were selected:

  • Teen Substance and Drug Use: Noel Thompson, Ariellys Quintana and Jaylee Cordero created and shared a video skit to spread awareness on this issue.

  • What Goes In the Blue Bin?: Chris Montovani, Devin Lowell and Danny Hurst brought awareness to the Sunset community about what items can be recycled and where.

  • Basketball Courts: Kaelyz Dunn worked with East Hartford Parks and Recreation and the Housing Authority to clean up and update the basketball courts and equipment at her apartment complex.
