Students across East Hartford learned more about why we celebrate and honor Veterans Day through several events and activities around the district this past month.
At Sunset Ridge School, 7th grade students participated in a Veterans Day Walk. Leading up to the event, families filled out a form with the name of a veteran they know. Students were then given bibs to wear during the walk with their veterans’ names. Some of those veteran family members even attended the walk. Sunset Ridge families and staff were also asked the share pictures of their veterans that were placed on a school bulletin board for the school community to view.
Goodwin Elementary School held a Veterans Day Event in which the whole school participated. Students heard from several local veterans and Mayor Connor Martin. They also enjoyed a song performed by the 5th grade. Following the assembly, all students went on a "Walk for the Wounded" around the school. As part of the event, the Goodwin community raised money and donations for both the Wounded Warrior Project and an organization called Boxes to Boots that sends care packages to our troops. In total, they raised $800 for Wounded Warriors and gathered 100 items to be donated to Boxes to Boots.
At East Hartford Middle School, veterans from East Hartford’s VFW Post 2083 were invited to visit Social Studies classrooms and share their service and experiences. The veterans were deployed during different wars and represented different military branches, which gave students a deeper understanding of the many sacrifices these men and women made for their country.
