State accountability results show academic gains overall for East Harford Public Schools and exceptional performance or growth at four district schools.
On November 2, the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) released results from the 2022-23 Next Generation Accountability System – a system where schools and districts earn points on a broad set of 12 indicators that help tell the story of how well a school is preparing its students for success in college, careers, and life. The system is designed to move beyond test scores and graduation rates to provide a more holistic, multifactor perspective of district and school performance and incorporates student growth over time.
Four of East Hartford’s schools were named “Schools of Distinction” based on their performance in these indicators in the 2022-2023 school year.
Connecticut IB Academy (CIBA) was one of 68 schools statewide that earned this distinction for its high overall performance. CIBA earned a total of 89% of the total possible points available across indicators.
Langford Elementary School, O’Brien Elementary School and O’Connell Elementary School were three of 122 schools statewide who earned the “School of Distinction” recognition for their high academic growth. Langford Elementary was recognized for its high academic growth in math for its High Needs students earning 80.9% of the growth target compared to a state-level average of 55.5%. O’Connell Elementary was recognized for its high academic growth in ELA for High Needs students. O’Connell’s growth indicator in this area shot up from 62% in 2021-2022 to 70.5% in 2022-2023. The state level average in 2022-2023 was 52.5%.
O’Brien Elementary earned “School of Distinction” status for its high academic growth in math for all students and for its High Needs population. O’Brien’s growth indicator in math saw high improvement from 54.1% (all students) and 54.8% (High Needs) in 2018-2019 to 83% (all students) and 84.4% (High Needs) in 2021-2022. In 2022-2023, O’Brien continued to grow reaching 85.6% for both populations.
In this report, schools are placed into one of five categories. Category 1 schools are the highest performing schools while Category 4 and 5 schools are those identified for state support. This year, both O’Brien and O’Connell schools moved up from Category 3 to Category 2. East Hartford does not have any Category 4 or 5 schools.
Across East Hartford Public Schools, all students are exceeding state-level growth numbers in the areas of ELA and Math, including individuals in the High Needs area. EHPS’ Accountability Index also showed better scores than the state average for the following additional indicators, demonstrating the district’s commitment to the whole child: Chronic Absenteeism (All Students), Physical Fitness, and Arts Access.
