Schools and classrooms around the district celebrated and honored Black History Month in a variety of creative and engaging ways this year. Schools read facts about Black historical figures during morning announcements, students researched Black history and heritage, and classrooms read stories and books by Black authors.
This year’s national theme for Black History Month was “African Americans and the Arts.” Several EHPS buildings incorporated that theme into schoolwide events.
At O'Brien Elementary, families were invited to attend a Black History Month Celebration the evening of February 15 and the whole school got together for a Black History Month assembly on February 23. The events featured student performances and artwork.
At CT IB Academy, students organized a schoolwide assembly that included music, dancing, reciting original poetry, and sharing information on famous Black figures in history.
At East Hartford Middle School, the world drumming ensemble, chorus, drill team and others performed during their Black History Month assemblies held for each grade level.
