Class of 2020 Update - Feb 2018

preparation is separation

Hard to believe February is half-way through the books and March (and SpringJ) is on the horizon. Throughout the year, we speak with students about “Preparation”. As we all know, being prepared, in school and in life, can be the difference between successful in anything we do. EHHS will be hosting “Life After High School” on March 8th @ 5:00 p.m. to further inform students and families on better preparing for their futures. Additionally, in four weeks, our students will take the PSAT (3/21/18). Counselors have been reviewing scores from October and encouraging students to use KHAN Academy, College Board, and Naviance as useful resources. With the SAT now being a graduation requirement and high stakes test for students being admitted to college, our team continues to provide support and guidance with all aspects of the test. Please speak with your child about the PSAT and contact our team with any questions.

college visits

We are excited to share with you all that the Sophomore class will be given the opportunity to visit a college campus this Spring, beginning on March 1st.  Students were given a list of the 6 schools that we will be taking tours of and instructed to rank their top 3 choices; all efforts to honor these requests will be made.  The colleges that we will be visiting are:  The University of Connecticut, University of Hartford, Central CT State University, Eastern CT State University, Manchester Community College and the University of St. Joseph. All visits will include a guided tour of the campus, lunch in the dining hall and time for questions.  Field trip permission slips will be given to students beginning this week.

social work office

Let’s be honest! We all know every teenagers favorite question to answer or more so ignore is “what are you going to do after high school?!” Typically speaking, the most common response is an “I don’t know”, followed by an attitude because most teenagers don’t even know what they are going to do next week. As noted above and in effort to alleviate some of the stress related to post graduation plans, we will take the sophomore class on different college visits in hope that our students can become motivated for their future! But wait, this is we need your help! As we move forward, please remind your children to step outside of their comfort zones and be open to learning different things related to life after high school. Together, let’s continue to lead the way, so each child can make the best decision related to their personal pathway of success.

loss of credit letters

The class of 2020 house team has have generated and distributed “Loss of Credit” letters to families for semester one courses. These letters are generated when a student has accrued 7 or more absences in a specific course. We understand that this may result in an increased sense of urgency regarding absences for our students. If you have any questions regarding this letter, please reach out to a house team member to discuss. As a reminder, students may not exceed 10 absences in a half-year course, or 20 absences in a full-year course in order to maintain the required “seat time” to earn credit. If a student has an “extenuating circumstance”, which may include, but not be limited to: illness or injury with a note from a doctor, family support needs, and individual student needs; they must turn in the required documentation to the house office in order to have these days “Verified” and not count against our attendance policy. Thank you for making attendance matter every day at EHHS!
