TLC Program

Teaching for Literacy Competence

The TLC Program is offered at Woodland School for students who need additional support in the area of reading.  It is taught on a one to one basis by Ms. Renee Betts and Mr. Clarence Knight.

The components of TLC include:

  • Literacy with Literature
  • Literacy with Letter

Under the Literacy with Literature portion of this program, students read trade books appropriate to their developmental level and continually learn the strategies necessary to read, comprehend, and write.  Each student has an individualized plan and advances to more difficult books according to their own progress.  From the very beginning, students build confidence in their reading ability.

Literacy with Letters is a proven successful approach to teaching decoding skills.  Students are trained to attend, focus, track, and remember.  This is illustrated through daily graphing of student progress.  There is also a writing component where the student works on letter formation, spelling, punctuation, and sentence writing.

Lastly, homework is sent home daily as parent involvement is a critical part of this program.
