Schools often wrestle with balancing the behavioral aspects of their work alongside academic work. At Synergy, we are committed to emphasizing the adult actions that are most likely to lead us to our desired outcome (all students learning at a high level, every day). Synergy staff meets daily to discuss student behavior and to strategize for the future including: (1) support staff meetings, (2) student support team (SST) meetings, and (3) instructional data team (IDT) meetings.
As a guide, Synergy draws upon the educational literature and is committed to the following:
Synergy has a comprehensive system to address problematic behavior that is tied to the Scientific Research Based Interventions(SRBI) model. The specifics in each tier can be viewed below:
Tier I behavioral strategies (structures that every teacher is doing in every classroom for every student). These strategies are the backbone of the model because without effective Tier I strategies an excessive number of students will need to be referred for additional services, suspended, or expelled.
At Synergy, current Tier I intervention strategies include: Utilizing Dragon Dollars, Positive Phone Calls, Core Belief Sheets, weekly social/emotional lessons, and use of the Career Readiness Inventory (CRI).
Tier II behavioral strategies in class (rapid responses for students). These responses are also in the traditional classroom but extend beyond what is working for the majority of students. These interventions are focused and aimed to keep students in the classroom.
At Synergy, Tier II interventions include: in class processing forms, weekly groups, use of support staff for targeted redirection, accessing social emotional team (SET) for guidance. At social emotional team meetings, student's behavioral data and CRI data is reviewed to modify participation in groups.
Tier III behavioral strategies (out of class) -- These short-term interventions aim to be restorative in nature. Unless required by state law, these interventions try to teach students to behave in a manner that will allow tier I and II interventions to work. As a last resort, suspensions and expulsions are utilized.
At Synergy, this includes: conferences (student and social worker, student and administrator, teacher and student, etc.), parental contact, student restorative measures, detentions, mediations, and, when all other options have been explored, suspension.
