East Hartford Public Schools (EHPS) is pleased to welcome Wendy Johns as the new Chief of Student Support Services. Johns began her role on July 1, leading special education and student services for the district.
Johns joined EHPS from Waterbury Public Schools, where she served as Director of Pupil Services and District School Climate Coordinator since June 2023. During her time in Waterbury, she led the development and implementation of comprehensive special education and student support programs, including Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), mental health services, and restorative practices.
Johns also oversaw compliance with applicable regulations and supervised a large team of special education professionals and related service providers. Her responsibilities included collaborating with students, families, educators, and other stakeholders; guiding Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and evaluation processes; and using data to strengthen program effectiveness and improve student outcomes.
“Ms. Johns brings a high-quality background in leadership, proven success in systems development, student-centered practices, and collaboration, along with a deep commitment to supporting all children. Her experience and expertise are a tremendous asset as we are working to strengthen the supports we provide to students and families in East Hartford,” said EHPS Superintendent Thomas Anderson.
Prior to her role in Waterbury, Johns served as an Area Coordinator for the Office of Residential Life at the University of New Haven. Earlier in her career, she spent eight years in the Brandywine School District in Delaware, where she served as both an assistant principal and principal.
Throughout her career, Johns has also presented at conferences on topics including trauma-informed practices, the impact of trauma on the brain, and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
Johns holds a master’s degree in School Leadership and a master’s degree in Special Education Administration from Wilmington University.
