WSCC team meets with CDC at CIBA

The Connecticut Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Partnership between East Hartford Public Schools and the University of Connecticut concluded its first year with a visit from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) representatives.

Last year, EHPS partnered with UConn on this 5-year project with the CDC to improve children’s overall health and well-being. East Hartford Public Schools is the only district in New England and one of only 20 districts across the country to receive this $500,000 in funding to align our schools to the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model. This model emphasizes the connection between physical and mental well-being and academic learning to promote equitable outcomes for all students.

In April, the CDC representatives came to Connecticut, and East Hartford specifically, to observe this work in action. They visited CIBA during its 2nd annual Wellness Day where students chose different wellness hobbies or practices to explore including tai chi, drawing and guitar. They sat in on a workshop with all the EHPS school teams focused on strategizing toward WSCC-related goals. They visited Mayberry Elementary School where they observed a Food Corps lesson and a physical education class. They also toured the school’s community garden, school-based health center and Family Resource Center.

The EHPS WSCC team did an outstanding job showcasing our district’s programming and services, and shared our plans for the rest of this 5-year project.
