Dear East Hartford Public Schools Staff and Families,
I want to take a moment to address the recent changes to the “Protected Areas” policy announced by the Department of Homeland Security - Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). We deeply understand the concern and uncertainty this change may bring to our families. Please rest assured that our school staff and administrators are committed to upholding your privacy and safety. In alignment with FERPA and our existing policies, we do not share student information, ensuring that our schools remain a safe and supportive environment for all. We are here to support our families and their children every step of the way.
All of our schools have secure entrances with cameras at the main door to communicate with visitors. All individuals visiting schools are already required to have the appropriate identification and documentation to enter our buildings. Any law enforcement, including Homeland Security, must have an official warrant signed by a judge to address any specific individual in our schools. In the event that Homeland Security arrives at a building, staff is directed to engage with them as they do with all visitors and notify the Superintendent’s Office and/or Safety Team immediately.
Below are the steps that we will employ in the event of a visit from Homeland Security - Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE):
Notify Leadership Immediately:
Ask for Documentation:
-
Respectfully ask the nature of their visit and for any legal documents, such as a warrant
-
Do not make copies or take photos; simply take note of what is presented
Grant Access Only With Approval:
-
The enforcement agents cannot enter school property without a signed judicial warrant
-
Politely inform the agents that you need to follow district protocols and await further instructions from school leadership
-
Please be sure they sign in/out to school visitor log per our policies and protocols
Reassure Families and Students:
Thank you, and please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns. We understand that this situation may bring stress and uncertainty for families and staff alike. Please know that we are committed to addressing these matters with compassion, respect, and in the best interest of our entire community. We are here to support one another.
Sincerely,
Thomas Anderson
Superintendent
