Community Connections Event

InterCommunity Health Care is partnering with East Hartford Public Schools to host East Hartford Healthy Community Connections. This free, family-friendly event will feature activities about healthy eating, connect community members with resources for food access, and discuss how to eat and be healthy within one’s culture.

The event is scheduled for May 11th (May 12th in case of rain) from 4:30-6:30pm at Early Childhood Learning Center at Hockanum School (191 Main St, East Hartford).

43% of East Hartford households do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs, causing food insecurity to be a big issue in the area. Event organizers hope to show community members how to overcome other barriers to food access and eat healthy even with a small budget.

"Every day we see students and families struggle to get food, especially healthy food. It is hard to be healthy mentally and physically while hungry," said Tricia Orozco, Director of School-Based Health Centers at InterCommunity. "Participants will leave the event with a bag of food and connections to community resources to get help if they need it." Families that attend will also be entered into a raffle to win prizes including cooking equipment and gift cards.

Supporters of this event include ShopRite, East Hartford Youth Services, Simply Chef Renee, United Way, East Hartford Hunger Action Team, East Hartford WIC, Sodexo, and UConn SNAP-Ed. If community members have questions, they are encouraged to contact InterCommunity’s school-based health centers at ECLC (860-622-5450) or Mayberry Elementary (860-622-5731).
