Principal’s Message

The third quarter is under way and we have made substantial progress on goal areas for this school year so far. Each of the focus areas has numerous strategies and daily actions intentionally planned and implemented to ensure effectiveness and success. Below, I have summarized efforts on each of the five focus areas for this school year. We look forward to continue progress as the spring semester moves along.

Engagement: Our PBIS committee of teachers and administrators recently implemented a workshop on race, culture and diversity. The staff engaged in discussions and activities regarding the impact of race, culture and diversity in various aspects of education.

Literacy: With a continued focus on literacy and reading ion all subject areas, the second cohort of teachers completed a mid-year training on West-Ed Reading Apprenticeship while all teachers engaged in a literacy workshop focused on reading strategies in the classroom.

Behavior: At the midyear point, we have seen a dramatic increase in positive behavior from students as well as a sharp decline in suspensions: bot in-school and out-of-school suspensions have seen a 39% decrease as compared to last year.

Attendance: Our focus on working with truant students and students who are considered chronically absent continues. Thus far, we have 12.7% of students are chronically absent; this is improved from last year’s rate of 17%.

Parents: Our Parent Conferences event earlier this month was successful. A bit more than twenty percent of parents came to retrieve report cards, complete the climate survey and meet with teachers and counselors. We had over 350 appointments set up using the online tool Schoolappointments.com.

Our students are working hard every day in the classroom and on the playing surface. Come check out our student-athletes as they enter into the tournament season.

Student Perspective

I am stressing. Seriously. We have our first cheerleading competition this Saturday, and I am nervous beyond belief. I just took a test today for AP Bio that I'm pretty sure I've failed, and I have a quiz tomorrow in AP US History as well as a test in Pre Calculus. And then there's the fact that just about all of the upperclassmen I know are already obsessing over Prom. We are all looking forward to summer time, and I think it's adding to our worries for the rest of the school year. Last but not least, I'm freaking out over Course Selection this Friday. How am I supposed to know in February what I want to do my Senior year? It all seems to real - next thing I know I'll be getting shipped off to college.
