Home of the Grizzly Bear

Where we walk and are happy, walk and are healthy, walk steadily and with a purpose.

We, the staff at Hockanum School, will provide and maintain an instructional program that will improve the academic and social skills of all our students and instill a life-long love of learning.

The staff at Hockanum is ready to work as a team with you and your child! Along with a committed and caring staff, Hockanum School has several unique services/ programs available to you and your family: An on-site School Based Health Center, Full day PreK/Readiness Programs, a Family Resource Center and our Parent-Teacher School Governance Council

The staff at Hockanum has begun an environmental program at Hockanum Environmental School. In an effort to continuously improve our school community and provide students with the best instruction, our team of educators has determined that weaving an environmental program into all curriculum areas will keep us 'current' in the rapidly changing 21st century. Science, social studies and technology are incorporated into our language arts, math and arts programs.

Our staff members were trained in a conservation and environmental education program called "Project WILD".  The Project WILD program:

·     allows teachers to build on the students' natural sense of wonder

·     provides hands-on interactive and engaging science lessons to all students from Readiness to Grade 6

·     offers opportunities to explore nature and wildlife

·     encourages outdoor exploration

·     develops positive impressions of the natural world

We believe that by bringing nature inside our classrooms and teaching our students to be ‘Stewards of the Earth’ will encourage them to be active participants in their own learning! We look forward to expanding our environmental program even more as the year progresses.

Hockanum School's Positive Behavior Support Plan is based on our B.E.A.R. Facts:

·     Be positive

·     Effort counts

·     Act responsibly

·     Respect others

We recognize students who demonstrate positive attitudes, beliefs and work ethic in several ways. Our monthly Character Assesmblies allow us to celebrate student successes together as a community. Each month, a different grade level performs for the entire school to help promote positive choices and the B.E.A.R. facts. Also, our Pawsitive Cards are a huge success! Each student who receives one, gains pride and a sense of worth when their name is said during closing announcements.

Hockanum Elementary School has a culturally diverse student population.  Our goal is to ensure that all of our families feel comfortable coming into our school and getting involved in their child’s education.  Please feel free to stop by the office and introduce yourself to us.  We look forward to meeting you!
