Welcome to Hockanum Elementary School

The staff at Hockanum is pleased to work with you and your child. Along with outstanding teachers, we have many exceptional programs to offer you including a Readiness Program, a Family Resource Center and an active P.T.T.

As you may have heard, the Hockanum staff has initiated an environmental program at Hockanum Environmental School. In an effort to continuously improve our school community and provide students with the best instruction, our team of educators has determined that weaving an environmental program into all curriculum areas would keep us 'current' in the rapid changing 21st century. Science, social studies and technology are now being incorporated into our language arts, math and arts programs.

Our staff members were trained in a conservation and environmental education program called "Project WILD". The Project WILD program:

  • allows teachers to build on the students' natural sense of wonder
  • provides hands-on interactive and engaging science lessons to all students from Readiness to Grade 6
  • offers opportunities to explore nature and wildlife
  • encourages outdoor exploration
  • develops positive impressions of the natural world

We believe that by bringing nature inside our classrooms and teaching our students to be ‘Stewards of the Earth’ will encourage them to be active participants in their own learning! We look forward to expanding our environmental program even more as the year progresses.

Pewter Pot Brook Initiative

Hockanum Environmental Staff and a team of local volunteers recently cleaned parts of Pewter Pot Brook which runs adjacent to our school grounds. Being outside firsthand to observe nature is an invaluable experience for all grades.

We will use Pewter Pot Brook, a designated wetland to:

  • observe different ecosystems
  • study the interdependence of living things
  • test water and soil quality
  • create plant and animal inventories
  • make maps of the area
  • watch changes in the environment
  • write poetry

The possibilities are endless! It is our hope that students learn about conservation, preservation and responsibility for all living things. Our long term goal is for students to develop a sense of personal awareness of the world around them in an effort to make them stewards of the earth and life-long responsible students.

Each month, we celebrate students that have made positive choices about their academic work, behavior and attitude.  Hockanum’s Positive Behavior Support Plan is based on our B.E.A.R. Facts.

  • Be positive
  • Effort counts
  • Act responsibly
  • Respect others

Hockanum Elementary School has a culturally diverse student population.  Our goal is to ensure that all of our families feel comfortable coming into our school and getting involved in their child’s education.  Please feel free to stop by the office and introduce yourself to us.  We look forward to meeting you!
