Be a Mentor! - East Hartford Public Schools

Please consider volunteering your time to be a caring adult mentor to an elementary school aged student.  Adult volunteers contribute just one hour a week to a child in our school based Mentor Program.  A mentor is a mature, caring adult who must be a good listener and relate to the child as a concerned friend would.

Throughout the school year, weekly meetings take place on school grounds during the school day, usually during lunch.   As part of these weekly visits, mentors and students talk to one another or engage in activities, such as crafts, drawing, board games, reading or working with a computer.

A mentor does not replace a parent or a teacher.  A mentor is a friend and a positive role model to a child.  Young people who have a mentor are more likely to stay in school and go on to college, raise their life aspirations, stay away from drugs, seek teachers’ trust, help others, and avoid fights and other violent behavior.

All applicants are interviewed and background checked.  Qualified mentors are provided with resources that will help you to develop a meaningful mentor relationship with your student.  If this volunteer opportunity interests you, please contact Vincent Crawford at 622-5105 or crawford.vd@easthartford.org

The East Hartford Mentor Program is sponsored by area businesses that support the E.H. School/Business Partnership Program.
