This year in the Above and Beyond course, we are focused on further developing the soft skills of students. We have addressed areas including SMART goal setting, team building, the importance of a positive attitude, problem solving and responding to feedback, stereotypes and diversity in the workplace, and effective time management so that students may not only be college and career ready, but able to effectively cope with adversity outside the walls of Synergy. Students are assigned a journal entry each class where they apply the lesson and class discussions to respond to reflective questions. Questions are designed to allow students to continually reflect on how they could improve themselves every day and prepare them to be successful in the workplace.
In addition to addressing the above areas, students participate in weekly class discussions/ debates where they identify a workplace related topic, research their arguments, and present to their peers. This activity will enable students to make informed decisions once they enter college and/or the workplace.
As the year progresses, students will practice and improve upon their interviewing skills and create attention grabbing cover letters and résumés so that they can acquire employment opportunities. They will also utilize the Naviance online curriculum where they will be able to explore career paths, identify their strengths to connect to prospective career paths, and much more.
