Language Arts Program

The Reading and Language Arts Curriculum, a living and working document, is standards-based and aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The curriculum emphasizes reading, speaking, process writing, listening, viewing, and using conventions of Standard English to ensure that students master the ability to communicate effectively.

Elementary Language Arts Curriculum Committee members have developed a rigorous curriculum which includes units of study that highlight Reading, Speaking, Listening, Writing and Presentation Skills in alignment with the expectations of the Connecticut Core State Standards. The curriculum provides students with a comprehensive approach to literacy that includes instruction for phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Daily instruction focuses on the development of skills in the areas of oral language, word recognition, multisyllabic word decoding, and reading fluency for both accuracy and automaticity. Comprehension and meaningful response to text are always the goal for every learner. Targeted Writing instruction brings students through the Writing process steps as well as writing tasks to demonstrate effective communication, the ability to speak about writing, and the opportunity to view and present writing products and projects.

Elementary instructors (K-5) use a workshop approach to teach literacy and writing.  In addition, a core phonological program, entitled Fundations, is used in grades K-2 to directly instruct phonics components and syllable types. Teachers also use supplemental materials to enhance the delivery of core instruction in order to support the needs of all learners. Authentic text selections as well as leveled texts in fiction and non-fiction are used in each classroom to meet the growth and development needs of all literacy learners. These comprehensive instructional approaches are supported and informed by universal skill assessments and frequent monitoring to maintain rigorous standards of student growth and achievement for all learners over time.

Mission

In alignment with the East Hartford Public Schools mission statement, the mission of the Secondary English Department is to ensure effective instruction every day in reading, writing, and critical thinking skills in order to prepare every student for college and careers.

Overview

English/Language Arts instruction serves as the cornerstone for student success in both the ELA classroom as well as in students’ content-area classes.  Instruction in reading, writing, and critical thinking is pivotal in ensuring that students develop the appropriate literacy skills needed to be successful in school as well as in life.  Each grade level utilizes a carefully designed curriculum that aligns with the Common Core State Standards and provides students with opportunities to demonstrate their critical literacy skills.

Middle School Program

The middle program is a comprehensive two-year program that is divided into three specific pathways depending upon a student’s individual learning needs: the Advanced Language Arts pathway, the standard Language Arts pathway, and the Intervention pathway.  All program pathways are full aligned with the Common Core State Standards and provide students with appropriate and rigorous instruction designed to help students reach their fullest potential.  Students engage in reading, writing, and critical thinking in all pathways in the middle school program.

High School Program

The high school program is a comprehensive four-year program designed to meet the rigorous demands of the Common Core State Standards.  Courses are sequential and skills build upon one another over the course of the four year program.  Students are required to earn credit in English I, II, III, and IV in order to graduate.  Students are enrolled in four full-years of English with opportunities to take additional elective courses in literature, poetry, drama, journalism, and creative writing during their senior year.  During their junior year, students may elect to take the American Studies course to satisfy their English 3 requirement.  During their senior year, students may elect to take the Human Rights course to satisfy their English 4 requirement.  In addition, two of our English IV courses – Introduction to College Reading and Writing and Foundations for College Reading and Writing – were recently revised to align with the English 093 and English 066 courses at Manchester Community College.
